Canadian cultural sovereignty has long been a concern, especially given the influence exerted by European traditions and contemporary American media. This concern has heightened given the increasing impact of globalization and to the extent that researchers are faced with even more complex issues as they try to understand how countries can maintain cultural sovereignty. One is cultural globalization at municipal levels and the SSHRC-funded research of "The Cultural Future of Small Cities" initiative seeks to address this knowledge deficit.
