United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Open Pedagogy Fellowship UN SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) Glossary Assignment Sharon Brewer, Thompson Rivers University (BC, Canada); Darian Qureshi, Pima Community College (Arizona) 2021-2022 Introduction: You are a part of a collegewide effort to increase access to education and empower students through "open pedagogy." Open pedagogy is a "free access" educational practice that places you - the student - at the center of your own learning process in a more engaging, collaborative learning environment. The ultimate purpose of this effort is to achieve greater social justice in our community in which the work can be freely shared with the broader community. This is a renewable assignment that is designed to enable you to become an agent of change in your community through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For this work, you will integrate the disciplines of Chemistry and Political Science to achieve SDG #6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Learning Objectives: − Research and appropriately assess meaning of terminology in accordance with the disciplines of chemistry and political science − Explain a selected term or phrase in your own words using appropriate language, grammatical conventions and terminology to convey clear meaning to the general public − Generate a glossary entry using appropriate format, citation styles and disciplinary conventions Purpose/Rationale: This assignment will develop and improve your academic skills, increase your awareness of global water and sanitation issues, and expand your interdisciplinary expertise while creating content to educate the public and increase awareness of the UN SDG objectives. Instructions: In class you have been introduced to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and specifically to Goal 6, Clean Water and Sanitation which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Review the UN SDG 6 overview, targets and indicators and progress and info tabs at https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal6. Review as well any of the global status indicators that interest you at the UN-Water SDG 6 Data Portal at https://www.sdg6data.org. Choose one term or phrase from either of the above websites you wish to create a glossary entry for and post them to the class glossary discussion forum (by assigned deadline). Once posted your instructor will review to approve you to proceed to create your glossary entry. Choices will be approved if they are from the provided websites, suitable to define, and not already taken by another student. Each glossary entry is submitted via our assignment submission portal where it will be reviewed and marked by your instructor. Feedback will be given and if full marks are not received you will be able to modify your glossary entry and resubmit. You may submit your glossary entry up to three times (up until the final deadline). Once marked as complete you will be able to post your glossary entry to our public glossary page (instructions will be provided).
