Dr. Danielle Truszowski, Community College of Baltimore County (Maryland); Dawne Bringeland MBA, EBC, MA, PHD (candidate), Thompson Rivers University (BC, Canada) 2021-2022 Introduction: You are a part of a collegewide effort to increase access to education and empower students through "open pedagogy." Open pedagogy is a "free access" educational practice that places you - the student - at the center of your own learning process in a more engaging, collaborative learning environment. The ultimate purpose of this effort is to achieve greater social justice in our community in which the work can be freely shared with the broader community. This is a renewable assignment that is designed to enable you to become an agent of change in your community through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For this work, you will integrate the disciplines of Leadership, Humanities, and Mathematics to achieve SDG #4: Quality Education. With a focus on Target 4.7: By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development. Learning Objectives: Students will seek to understand local leadership and compare and contrast against global leadership using community socio-cultural and socio-economic status of the community. Purpose/Rationale: Students will gain an understanding of the cultural nuances of their chosen community and how they are represented in the leadership of the community. They will analyze the socio-economic status of the community and apply that information to explain the type of leadership and the message the leadership is sending to the community at large. Instructions: Objective: To examine leadership models in your community and to compare and contrast local leadership models against global leadership concepts. Your research will seek to understand how community leadership influences residents, promotes or not social justice, and cultural norms. Your examination of community leadership will help you understand the cultural nuances of your chosen community. The outcome of your research is to create recommendations that would help community leaders shift to more global mindset to improve socio-cultural and socio-economic standards of the community.
