Promising Practices in Cplul’kw’ten West: Independence People are given opportunities to speak, to lead, to express themselves, and to grow in a positive space where everyone's views are important. • We maintain an empowerment attitude when it comes to studies and work that students, staff, and faculty do. • Ideas are expressed freely and people’s lived experience are valued AND built on the foundation of Trust and Respect. • Each student and staff has their own personal Journey that they are on and we cultivate a ‘No one size fits all’ approach. • Work together as close as we can without overstepping others. North: Generosity The spirit of Generosity is ingrained in our practice, Students receive the time and energy from staff while they also in turn share their time and energy with fellow students. • Ideas, tips, language, and ways of knowing are shared amongst students, staff, and faculty • If needed, people are generous with what is available. • Students are also very giving and generous with time, efforts, etc. • Everyone who wants to contribute is welcomed and encouraged to South: Mastery Students are supported with Mentors, Elders, and staff by connecting them to the services on and off campus. East: Belonging We create a welcoming environment where students feel they have a voice, a space, and a purpose. • We bring services departments and agencies to meet with students face to face. • We walk WITH students through the many processes and challenges of Academics and Personal life that they have Physically, Mentally, Emotionally, and Spiritually. • We are careful not to create dichotomies and practice failing forward and honouring this place as a learning community. • “We are all teachers, and we are all Learners” • We acknowledge students for where they are at and where they have come from; celebrating their successes in reaching this point. • Keeping to the belief that “every student that walks through that door [TRU], is a miracle” (Dr. Nathan Mathew), we withhold negative judgments and listen to their story. • We maintain a sense of belonging through creating a space for students to feel like Cplul’kw’ten is a ‘home away from home’. • Includes the many elements of home: food, including traditional foods; sense of family, by having Mentors, staff, and Elders; and, helping one another, students own the space.
