United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Open Pedagogy Fellowship Quality Education Proactive Videos Amanda D. McPherson M. A. Ed., Pima Community College (Arizona) Erin Woodford, Thompson Rivers University (BC, Canada) 2021-2022 Introduction: You are a part of a collegewide effort to increase access to education and empower students through "open pedagogy." Open pedagogy is a "free access" educational practice that places you - the student - at the center of your own learning process in a more engaging, collaborative learning environment. The ultimate purpose of this effort is to achieve greater social justice in our community in which the work can be freely shared with the broader community. This is a renewable assignment that is designed to enable you to become an agent of change in your community through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For this work, you will integrate the disciplines of Early Childhood STEAM and Communication or Journalism to achieve SDG #4: Quality Education. Focusing on Target 4.2: By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care, and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education and Target 4.2: By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care, and preprimary education so that they are ready for primary education. Learning Objectives: 1. Develop appropriate methods used to encourage interest and participation of parents’ and families in STEAM activities. 2. Record a STEAM lesson that integrates three modalities. 3. Understand the skills of video making. Purpose/Rationale: Many families cannot afford quality early education for their children. It is not only the cost of attending a quality preschool but there are also transportation issues due to families only having one or no vehicle. One way we can make education accessible for all families is to make videos of quality lessons for parents to use in their home. Instructions: This project allows you the opportunity to research a STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) topic you would like to teach to preschoolers ages 3-5 years old. Please remember to find a lesson that is developmentally appropriate, and it must integrate at least three modalities of STEAM. Keep in mind families have limited time and may be low-income as you plan the suggested home activity. Materials used should be low cost, everyday household items or recyclables. Then you record yourself teaching the lesson. These videos will be uploaded to our class Youtube channel and available for families to utilize so their children will have access to quality early childhood education STEAM lessons Format Requirements: Video should include: 1. The name of the lesson. 2. Materials needed for the lesson. 3. Step-by-step directions to complete the lesson. 4. Explanation of the concept you are teaching. You can either record the video with your phone or tablet and upload it to our class Youtube channel or you can record yourself using a video recording app then upload the video. If you do not feel comfortable recording yourself in the video, do not worry because you can just record the activity and you do not have to be in the actual video.
